Requests go to a single QBCC-licensed Toowoomba painter, who quotes and does the painting.

The preparation is the paint job

On any exterior repaint, most of the hours go in before the first coat. Washing off dirt and mould, scraping back flaking paint, sanding edges, filling cracks and gaps, replacing or treating soft timber, priming bare spots. A new coat over loose old paint lifts with it, usually within a year or two. When you compare quotes, look at what each one says about preparation, not just the number of coats.

Painting with the weather

Toowoomba’s climate decides the working day for an exterior job:

  • Cold mornings. Paint tins list a minimum application temperature. On a frosty winter morning, work starts once the surface has warmed.
  • Dew. Timber can stay wet with dew well into the morning in cooler months. Paint over damp timber fails.
  • Full sun. A west wall in a hot afternoon dries paint too quickly and leaves lap marks. Painters follow the shade around the house.
  • Rain. Exterior paint needs dry hours after it goes on, so storms mean rescheduling.

None of this is the painter dragging the job out. It is what a lasting finish needs. See painting in a Toowoomba winter.

Timber, brick and render

Weatherboard and timber trims need flexible exterior paints and attention at the joints, where water gets in first. Painted brick and render need a masonry system that lets moisture escape. Bare face brick that has never been painted is a bigger decision: once painted, it stays painted. Render and brick painting has more.

Older homes

If the house was built before 1970, assume there may be lead-based paint under the newer layers. It changes how scraping and sanding are done, and it is worth asking about before work starts. Lead paint in older homes explains the basics, and Queenslander and heritage painting covers character homes.

What the quote should list

The surfaces included (walls, trims, eaves, fascias, gutters, doors, verandah), the preparation, the paint system and number of coats, colour changes, and how the site will be protected. Ask about access too: two-storey work may need scaffolding or a lift.

Requesting a painter

Send photos of each side of the house and phone 0468 069 048, or use the form. The request goes to a single licensed Toowoomba painter, who arranges a visit and quotes.

Questions

What people ask about this

Does a painter need a licence in Queensland?

Yes, for painting work valued over $3,300. Requests here only go to QBCC-licensed painters. You can look up any painter's licence class on the QBCC licensee register, and the number should appear on the quote.

Can my house be painted in winter?

Usually, yes, with shorter working days. Exterior paint needs the temperature on the tin and dry surfaces, so on frosty or dewy Toowoomba mornings work starts later. Interior painting is barely affected.

How many coats does a repaint need?

Commonly a primer or undercoat where needed plus two topcoats, but it depends on the surface, the paint and any colour change. The quote should state the system and the number of coats.
