Character homes need patience
Toowoomba has a remarkable stock of timber Queenslanders, federation houses and workers’ cottages, especially in the older suburbs around the city centre and along the escarpment. These houses are full of detail: fretwork and brackets, turned posts, verandah balustrades, VJ walls, casement windows and decorative gables. Painting them well takes far longer than painting a modern home of the same size, and that is where rushed quotes fall apart.
Old paint, many layers
A house that has been repainted every decade or so for a century carries a lot of old paint, and some of it will be lead-based. Lead paint that is intact is not an emergency, but scraping and sanding it creates dust that is harmful, especially to young children. The approach changes: testing, wet methods instead of dry sanding, containment and proper clean-up. Ask any painter how they will handle it. See lead paint in older homes.
Timber repairs
Older timber hides rot at the bottom of posts, in window sills and along verandah boards. Painting over soft timber hides the problem for a season. A good repaint includes finding it, and either repairing or flagging it for a carpenter.
Colour schemes
Period homes often look best in schemes that suit their era: a body colour with contrasting trims and highlighted details. Paint companies publish heritage colour ranges, and a sample board laid against the house in daylight helps. If your home is heritage-listed or in a character area, check with Toowoomba Regional Council whether changes to the exterior need approval before you choose.
Inside
Inside, VJ walls, high ceilings and original joinery deserve the same care: filling gaps without losing the grooves, and choosing finishes that suit old timber. Interior painting has more.

What people ask about this
My house is old. Could the paint contain lead?
Homes built before 1970 are the most likely to have lead-based paint. Intact paint is manageable; the danger is dust from sanding. Ask how the painter will test for it and prepare without dry sanding.

A few lines and the suburb is enough. Photos help the painter most.
