Requests go to a single QBCC-licensed Toowoomba painter, who quotes and does the painting.
Masonry is different
Brick and render hold moisture and move with temperature. Masonry paints are made to cope with that, letting water vapour out while keeping rain off. Using the wrong paint on masonry traps moisture, and the result is bubbling and peeling.
Before painting
- Cracks in render are filled with a flexible filler, and bigger structural cracks get looked at before they are painted over.
- Efflorescence, the white powdery salt that comes out of brick and render, is cleaned off and the cause checked, because painting over it fails.
- New render needs time to cure before it is painted; the render or paint supplier gives the waiting period.
- Chalky old paint needs cleaning and a sealer so the new paint grips.
Painting face brick
Painting unpainted face brick is a popular way to modernise a 1970s or 1980s Toowoomba home, and it can look sharp. It is also a one-way decision: removing paint from brick later is slow and expensive. A painter worth using will talk through the pros and cons, the right system and the upkeep before taking it on.
Colour on the range
Large expanses of very dark paint get hot in summer sun and can show fading. Paint companies publish guidance on colours for exterior masonry; ask whether your chosen colour is suited to full western sun.
Requesting a painter
Send photos of the walls, say whether they are render, painted brick or bare brick, and phone 0468 069 048. A single licensed Toowoomba painter will get in touch. The rest of the outside is in exterior house painting.
What people ask about this
Should I paint my face brick?
It can modernise a home, but it is a one-way decision because removing paint from brick is hard. It needs a masonry paint system and regular upkeep. Talk it through with the painter first.
