What a House Painting Quote Should Include
Line by line, what belongs on a painting quote, so two of them can be weighed fairly.
Why there are no prices here
House painting prices depend on the size and condition of the house, the preparation needed, the number of colours, access and the paint chosen. Any number on a website would be wrong for most homes. What helps is knowing what a complete quote covers.
The checklist
Surfaces included. Walls, ceilings, trims, doors, windows, eaves, fascias, gutters, verandah, fences. What is in, and what is out.
Preparation. Washing, scraping, sanding, filling, priming. On older homes, how lead paint will be checked and handled.
Repairs. Whether rotten timber, cracked render or damaged boards are included, or priced separately once found.
Paint system. The brand or range, the primer or undercoat, and the number of topcoats.
Colours. How many colours, and whether sample patches are included.
Access. Ladders, scaffolding or a lift for two-storey work.
Protection and clean-up. Covering floors, gardens and furniture, and leaving the site clean.
Licence. For work over $3,300, the painter’s QBCC licence number.
Comparing
A quote that is much cheaper often has less preparation or fewer coats. Ask each painter to fill in what is missing, and compare like with like.
